Description
The /etc/shadow file contains the list of local system accounts. It is vital to system security and must be protected from unauthorized modification. The file also contains password hashes which must not be accessible to users other than root.

Check the mode of the /etc/shadow file. # ls -lL /etc/shadow If the /etc/shadow file has a mode more permissive than 0400, this is a finding. NOTE: The /etc/shadow file will not exist if the system is in Trusted Mode. Check the mode of the TCB auth files and directories. # ls -lLd /tcb /tcb/files /tcp/files/auth # ls -lL /tcb/files/auth/[a-z,A-Z]/* If the mode of /tcb directory is more permissive than 0555, this is a finding. If the mode of /tcb/files or /tcb/files/auth directories is more permissive than 0771, this is a finding. If the mode of any of the /tcb/files/auth/[a-z]/* is more permissive than 0664, this is a finding.

Trusted Mode is a requirement. As such, the shadow file should not exist.
